Geneva, Switzerland, July 27, 2023

Negotiators from around the world have gathered in Geneva for the Second Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

This session marks the start of a two-year process to prepare for the 2026 NPT Review Conference, which is scheduled to take place in April 2026. The NPT is a landmark international treaty that aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and promote nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation. The treaty has been in force since 1970 and has been signed by 191 countries.

The Preparatory Committee will discuss a wide range of issues related to the NPT, including the implementation of the treaty, nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The Committee will also consider proposals for strengthening the NPT and making it more effective.

The 2026 NPT Review Conference will be a critical opportunity for the international community to assess the progress that has been made in implementing the treaty and to set the agenda for future action. The Second Session of the Preparatory Committee will play a vital role in ensuring that the 2026 Review Conference is successful in achieving its goals.
