World Emoji Day: Celebrating the Digital Language

Celebrating Expression and Communication

In today's digital world, emojis have become an integral part of how we communicate. From expressing emotions to conveying ideas, emojis have transformed the way we interact online. World Emoji Day, celebrated annually on July 17, is a special occasion to recognize the impact of this ever-evolving language.

The Birth of an International Icon

The story of emojis begins in 1999 when Japanese designer Shigetaka Kurita created a set of 176 pictograms for the NTT DoCoMo i-mode mobile internet platform. These initial emojis were designed to make communication easier and more concise in a text-based environment. Since then, emojis have been adopted by major platforms such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft, and have become a global phenomenon.

In 2014, Jeremy Burge, the founder of Emojipedia, established World Emoji Day to celebrate the increasing use of emojis and promote their value as a form of digital expression. The date of July 17 was chosen because it is the date displayed on the calendar emoji on the iPhone at the time.

Today, World Emoji Day is a day to appreciate the diversity, creativity, and inclusivity of emojis. It's a day to celebrate the power of visual communication and the role that emojis play in connecting people around the world.
